Join the Dig

For more information about joining the Lechaion Harbor and Settlement Land Project (LHSLP) for the Summer 2025 excavation season (May 24-July 19), please email Dr. Paul Scotton, paul.scotton@csulb.edu.

Lechaion was the first and primary port site for Corinth, a major trade hub and a center of artistic innovation, and linked to the wider Mediterranean world. LHSLP’s excavations at Lechaion since 2016 have revealed extensive Roman-period occupation at the site, yielding valuable insights into this important time and place in both Greek and Roman history.

LHSLP field school students receive practical, hands-on training in archaeological field methods, and artifact analysis. The field school is a major component of the project. Students will be trained in excavation techniques and methodologies, basic ceramic identification and sorting, field recording (primarily in iDig on iPads), and data entry. Opportunities exist in learning basic photogrammetry, conservation practices, and data base management.

Students have the opportunity to learn from LHSLP’s interdisciplinary and international team of scholars and specialists and receive an introduction to ancient and modern Greek culture through field trips to nearby sites and museums. Various specialists on the staff lecture on topics such as epigraphy, archaeo-botany, numismatics, geomorphology, ceramic studies, etc. Four trips will be made to nearby archaeological sites and museums which have included in the past, Mycenea, Tiryns, Nauplion, Nemea, Mystra, Isthmia, Kenchreai, Stymphalus, and Olympia.

Students are housed in the village of Ancient Corinth in a new complex in rooms of 2-5 students. Each unit is air conditioned and has wifi and a kitchen with maid service. Laundry facilities are on site.

Come get your hands dirty and help uncover new parts of the ancient past!
